When it comes to fastening materials together, blind rivets have become a go-to solution for various industries and DIY enthusiasts alike. These versatile fasteners offer a reliable and efficient way to join materials without requiring access to both sides of the workpiece. In this blog, we will delve into the world of blind rivets, exploring how they work and why they have become an essential tool in countless applications.

1. Understanding Blind Rivets:

Blind rivets (also known as pop rivets) are mechanical fasteners designed to permanently join two or more materials. Unlike traditional rivets, blind rivets can be installed from one side of the workpiece, making them perfect for applications where access is restricted or limited. They consist of a cylindrical body with a mandrel, which is a thin rod that extends through the center of the rivet.

2. The Riveting Process:

Installing blind rivets involves a straightforward process that can be accomplished with basic tools. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how blind rivets work:

a. Preparing the Workpiece:

First, the materials to be joined are aligned and pre-drilled with a hole that matches the diameter of the blind rivet.

b. Inserting the Rivet:

The blind rivet is inserted into the pre-drilled hole, with the mandrel extending through the workpiece.

c. Applying Pressure:

When using a rivet tool, pressure is applied to the blind rivet's head. This causes the body of the rivet to expand, creating a secure grip on the materials being joined.

d. Breaking the Mandrel:

While applying pressure, the mandrel is pulled back into the rivet tool, causing it to break off near the head of the rivet. This ensures a tight and secure connection.

3. Advantages of Blind Rivets:

Blind rivets offer several advantages that make them a popular choice in various industries:

a. Accessibility:

Installing blind rivets from one side of the workpiece makes them ideal for applications where access is limited or restricted.

b. Speed and Efficiency:

Blind rivets can be installed quickly and easily, reducing assembly time and increasing productivity.

c. Versatility:

Blind rivets can join different materials, including metal, plastic, and even wood, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

d. Cost-Effective:

Blind rivets are cost-effective compared to other fastening methods, providing a reliable and durable connection at an affordable price.

e. Vibration Resistance:

Blind rivets form a secure and resilient joint, with the expanded blind end increasing resistance to vibrations and ensuring long-term durability.

4. Applications of Blind Rivets:

Blind rivets find applications in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, construction, and manufacturing. They are commonly used in assembling furniture, automotive body panels, HVAC systems, and electrical enclosures, among many other applications.

<![CDATA[Learn The Difference | Rivets, Rivet Nuts & Rivet Stud's |]]> https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/learn-the-difference-rivets-rivet-nuts-and-rivet-studs https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/learn-the-difference-rivets-rivet-nuts-and-rivet-studs Tue, 25 Jul 2023 00:00:00 GMT

WHAT IS A BLIND RIVET?

Blind rivets are a type of rivet used to join a range of materials together with long-term performance reliability. Blind rivets offer several advantages in one solution, including providing access to the blind side in an application. Blind rivets come in various forms, materials, shapes, lengths, and even colours. Part-On supplies blind rivets, guaranteeing a high-quality and reliable connection every time!

HOW DOES A RIVET WORK?

A blind rivet consists of two parts: the rivet head and the mandrel body. The rivet head is located on the processing side and is available in a range of diameters and different forms. Some examples of rivet head variants are domed, countersunk, and large flange heads. The mandrel body comes in various lengths, depending on the thickness of the material to be riveted (your grip range). The job of the mandrel body is to deform the rivet head. It has a predetermined breaking point, at which the mandrel body breaks off once the rivet has been deformed sufficiently.

WHAT IS A BLIND RIVET NUT?

A blind rivet nut can be set blind in an application with access from only one side. It is precisely this level of simplicity that makes blind rivet nuts such an intelligent solution. In the case of hollow profiles and components with one-sided access, setting blind rivet nuts is often the only way to create a thread in thin or soft components. This process allows threads to be added in just a few simple steps and with guaranteed speed, safety, and reliability. Blind rivet nuts are used across many diverse areas of trade and industry – wherever a robust and non-permanent connection is required. Examples include the automotive, white goods, electronics, food, solar, and heating and air conditioning industries.

HOW DOES A RIVET NUT WORK?

The setting head is the part of the blind rivet nut that rests on the visible surface of the component. The operator can choose between the following variants: A blind rivet nut with a domed head provides a large contact surface on the application. If you are looking for a flush application, thus allowing the assembly component to rest so it is almost flat, a blind rivet nut with a small head is the ideal option. Finally, there are countersunk blind rivet nuts perfect for flat surfaces in countersunk holes. The shank is part of the blind rivet nut that deforms during the setting procedure and fixes the blind rivet nut in the application. What is known as the closing head is formed in this process.

It is down to the customer to select the material specific to the application. You can use blind rivet nuts manufactured from steel, aluminium, monel, or stainless steel.

WHAT IS A BLIND RIVET STUD?

Blind rivet studs are fasteners that combine blind rivet nuts and screws, providing an alternative to welding studs and press-in studs from a technological and financial point of view.

Blind rivet studs have two functions:

  1. They join thin materials even if they differ (e.g., sheet metal and plastic).
  2. On the other hand, they provide an additional fastening point or a positioning aid. Different dimensions, materials, and head shapes cover a wide range of applications. In addition to the standard range, application-specific applications are possible.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING RIVET STUDS?

  • Dual function: Joining materials and providing an additional fastening point (threaded stud)
  • Access only required from one side
  • The high load-bearing capacity of thread
  • Simple, neat, and fast processing
  • Space-saving
  • No damage to painted surfaces
  • No heat transfer, i.e., no change in material structure
  • Suitable for repairing welding studs
  • Production of electrically conductive connections

Rivets, Rivet Nuts and Rivet Stud also share some similarities:

<![CDATA[Automated Riveting System 101 With Part-On]]> https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/automated-riveting-system-101-with-part-on https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/automated-riveting-system-101-with-part-on Tue, 28 Sep 2021 00:00:00 GMT

As we move into the era of industry 4.0 automation is the future for most manufacturing businesses and the only way to cope in the present marketplace. It allows for higher quality parts, higher and more consistent production and allows companies to avoid employee absences etc.

What are automated riveting systems?

A riveting machine is used to automatically set rivets to join materials together. The riveting machine offers greater consistency, productivity, and lower cost when compared to manual riveting.

What is the difference between fully automated and semi automated?

Within manufacturing production processes can be fully manual, semi-automated or fully automated. Generally, semi-automatic equipment includes an operator starting the process and machine finishes. A fully automatic system starts the process and finishes it with minimal operator assistance.

4 Benefits of implementing automated rivet / rivet nut systems in your business!

  • Saving money - The work can get done faster and with less people than with manual equipment.
  • Improve EfficiencyIt takes less time to do a job and it is more likely to be done correctly.
  • Maximise Space - Riveting can be done in one area by one machine rather than having multiple stations for employees, especially now considering social distancing!
  • Better Customer Service - Guarenteed accuracy for happy customers never mind fulfiling orders/jobs faster!

4 Disadvantages of implementing automated rivet / rivet nut systems in your business.

  • Initial cost of equipment - Automed equipment is more expensive up front than manual equipment. But Click Here to find out about super deduction in tax
  • Reduced flexibility for change - Once automated systems are in place, it is likely not as easy to make changes in your workspace. But once you go automated and see how smoothly everything runs, it’s not likely you’ll want to return to manual equipment afterward.
  • Possible downtime due to malfunction - With automatic machines there is always the chance of a problem or breakdown, which can lead to considerable downtime while it is repaired by a trained specialist.
  • Maintenance costs - Maintenance should be handled by specialists - like Part-On - who are trained to inspect and undergo maintence so that it runs smoothly and efficiently. Properly maintained equipment will save you money in the long run by preventing problems and increasing the overall lifespan of your systems.

<![CDATA[Battery Tools Or Air Tools? Which Is Better?]]> https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/battery-tools-or-air-tools-which-is-better https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/battery-tools-or-air-tools-which-is-better Tue, 21 Sep 2021 00:00:00 GMT

Two common types of power tools are pneumatic/air tools, which are powered by compressed air, and battery tools, which use a battery to power them. Each type of power tool comes with pros and cons to consider depending on your application. Choosing which tool is best for you should depend on what your specific needs are.

When choosing between different power tools, an important thing to consider is whether the tool can get the job you require done. For example, if you need to cut through steel, you will need a specific torque. Choosing a tool for convenience or cost is not always the best point of call as if it isn't strong enough to get the job done, this will waste time and money.

  • Pneumatic tooling is notoriously strong, reliable, and robust. You can adjust the torque by allowing the air compressor to deliver more or less power. This has made them the favoured tool of choice in places like machine shops and auto shops.
  • Battery tooling is also becoming more powerful as the market expands. Air tools were "on top" in terms of power/torque; this was especially true for cordless tools, which couldn't offer the same juice... but things are changing! With new battery technologies and tool design, electric tools are coming to rival air tools in power.

Nobody wants to spend unnecessary money on a tool. On the other hand spending, too little could mean you're not getting exactly what you need. Tools pay for themselves in the work they do for you if they match your application. When considering cost, find the balance between what you are spending and what you are getting with the type of power tool you choose.

  • Pneumatic tools have higher upfront costs, lower maintenance costs. There are many reasonably priced air tooling on the market, for example, the Part-On Range V-2 or FAR RAC211. They also tend to last longer due to being robust and reliable. However, you cannot run an air tool without an air compressor, and it can be costly to purchase and fund electricity. Air compressors are an expensive and unavoidable up-front cost for pneumatic tools, although most businesses already have them in their units.
  • Battery tools can be more cost-effective than air tooling, but this is not always the case as you pay for quality! The nice thing about battery tools—corded—is that they have their power supply worked in, so you don't need to invest in a power source. A battery tool will always be a little more expensive than an air tool that performs the same task, although as a purchaser, you should consider an inexpensive air tool is useless without a compressor, which comes at a cost.

If you are using tools all day, every day, then the desired feel of the tool and how it works is specific to each operator! Different battery tools offer a variety of grips and weights. These factors become more and more critical the more hours you spend handling them.

  • Pneumatic tooling can be light yet limiting. Either tool type will offer a comfortable hand fit; that is just a matter of trying and finding what feels good to you! Both tool types can vary in weights/size, so it is essential to source this information before you buy! for example, the Gesipa Taurus 4 is 2.2kg, but tools such as the FAR RAC211 are 1.4kg. The main con with pneumatic tooling is that there is no cordless option. Air tools still need a hose to connect to the compressor, so handling them will always have that drawback.
  • Battery tooling makes for easy movement. There is a reason cordless tools are a favoured option—they allow you to move around! You are not tethered to an air compressor, so there is nothing to trip over; therefore, this can be considered from a health and safety standpoint. And while battery tools can be heavier, they are becoming more lightweight as technology advances! For example, the beloved Gesipa Accubird is now only 2kg, and the FAR EB500 new range is only 1.8kg! If you are a business/individual on the go, then a battery tool is the best use for you as you can take it wherever you go!

Smart technology isn’t limited to cell phones and tablets; even battery and air tools are becoming smarter! New technologies are coming onto the market that can allow your tools to tell you more about how you work and what they need.

  • Pneumatic tools are exploring the capability of Bluetooth; we are beginning to see this creep into the air pneumatic tool market! These tools gather data as the device is used, transmitted to your phone, tablet, PC, or computer. The tool can tell you details about the angles you are working on, the torque offered, and information on the tool’s needs, e.g., maintenance.
  • Battery tooling is expanding. Manufacturers are releasing cordless power tools with intelligent batteries, for example, the Gesipa iBird, a networked device working with Bluetooth and wifi! These batteries also utilise Bluetooth technologies to give you information on your tools and how you use them. They let you know when the device runs hot or needs a break to achieve the best performance.

<![CDATA[Using Aluminium Extrusion For Van Conversions]]> https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/using-aluminium-extrusion-for-van-conversions https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/using-aluminium-extrusion-for-van-conversions Thu, 17 Jun 2021 00:00:00 GMT

Aluminium Extrusion is an excellent choice of material when undertaking a van/campervan conversion; aluminium extrusion is a lightweight and reliable solution for building products. Most of our clients choose to use 20x20 profiles or 30x30 profiles due to its lightweight nature, and also the fact that this profile is smaller allows for more space-saving opportunities.

See below some inspiration of how you can use aluminium extrusion in your van conversion below:

Van Fold Away Bed

Foldaway beds are a necessity in camper van conversions as this design allows enough room to sleep comfortably and the opportunity to decrease the size of the bed to allow for extra space when not sleeping. The bed can also be used as a table when folded away.

The main question our customers ask us is; will the smaller profiles be suitable to hold the weight put onto a bed? If appropriately supported by fixings and a suitable base, the aluminum profile will not bend and will cater to the requirements of a bed. If you would like to "double-check" the tolerance of the aluminium extrusion, you can use Bosch's MT Pro Software to design and calculate tolerances.

Van Kitchen Cabinet

A simple design from aluminium can create a space-saving and lightweight solution in your van kitchen. By incorporating your own storage spaces, you can ensure there is a space for everything! Once you have achieved this simple aluminium frame, you can add; locks, worktops, hinged doors, draws, and much more!

We also sell plastics such as polycarbonate and dilite in which you can use (along with mounting rim) to box off the frame to achieve a complete result.

Over-Head Van Storage

Aluminium Extrusion is an excellent idea for creating overhead storage bespoke to suit your van conversion planning!

By simply connecting the profiles, adding hinges, handles, and plastic (or other materials) to box it off, you can create a bespoke overhead storage space! This storage solution is excellent for areas with just not enough floor or storage space for all your belongings!

Van Kitchen Sink / Cooking Area

Kitchen appliances can be integrated into the aluminium profile frame to achieve a complete unit that stores all the necessary wires, piping, etc.

You can request this bespoke solution to be made to size suit your van/camper. In addition, you can add Start-stop castors to the product to achieve a portable sink/cooking area, which can also be secured when traveling.

Foldaway Van Table

We all need space for a table, whether it's to; do work, eat, place drinks, etc.; therefore, a foldaway table for a van conversion is a perfect idea!

This adjustable foldaway table allows space for the necessities of daily life, and you can also retract it to allow for extra room. In addition, as seen in the image, you can integrate aluminium profiles into your existing furniture, so once folded away, you won't even notice it's there!

<![CDATA[6 Ways To Connect / Join Aluminium Extrusion]]> https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/6-ways-to-connect-join-aluminium-extrusion https://www.part-on.co.uk/blog/post/6-ways-to-connect-join-aluminium-extrusion Thu, 10 Jun 2021 00:00:00 GMT

"What is the best way to connect aluminium profile?" is a frequently asked question from our customers. The answer is, it all depends on your requirements! Whether you're looking for the most stable way of connecting aluminium profiles or rather the most cost-effective way, there will be an option for you! There are numerous techniques/products to assist with joining the aluminium profile, all of which will be specific to the performance requirements of the extruded profile.

Please see below the most common products used to secure/join aluminium profiles together:

Standard Brackets

Standard Brackets are the most commonly used bracket by our customers. You can use this bracket to connect two aluminum profiles or panels at right angles. The connection angle can be closed with the cover cap.

This is a cost-effective and easy method of joining aluminium profiles at a right angle.

Corner Brackets

Corner brackets are used to connect up to three aluminum profiles at right angles. This Bracket is perfect when creating products such as work benches.

Corner brackets can connect either 3 square or half curved profiles with equivalent cross sections.

Square or Rounded cover caps can be purchased with this bracket in order to achieve a squared off or rounded finish to your build (rather than leaving the profiles exposed)

Inner Brackets

Right Inner Bracket Example

Inner brackets offer an elegant, easy to assemble profile connection. Especially suitable for constructing door frames, Protective grills, or partition walls.

Inner brackets can be used to connect two aluminium profiles without the need for machining.

You can purchase either a left or a right inner bracket, depending on your requirements.

Cubic Connector

Cubic connectors are used for torsion-proof corner connections of aluminium profiles with equivalent cross-sections.

Cubic connectors can be purchased as a two-way or three-way connector, depending on your requirements.

As per the example image, Cover caps can purchase caps to create a flush, presentable connection in your builds.

Parallel Connector

Parallel Connector are used for a gap free connection between two aluminium strut profiles parallel to the axis ,or at any angle.

Parallel connectors consist of two sliding blocks with welded springs for simple assembly. Attractive interior connection, e.g for material shelves. Connection possible in any position!

T-Connector

T-Connectors are used to "tee" connect two aluminum profiles at a right angle. This is a flush and easy way to connect two pieces of profile.
