Rivet Nut Tools to Consider

A rivet nut or as they’re often referred to threaded inserts, is a one piece nut featuring an internal thread that is anchored from one side of an assembly and capable of withstanding high pull out loads when in application. There are a number of different options for setting rivet nuts, including manual setting or pneumatic setting tools that offer a fast, secure method in production environments.

The advantages of a manual setting tool are in maintenance applications, for instance on site applications where an air supply may not be present, or where low quantities of rivet nuts are being set. They are more cost effective than a battery rivet nut tool, and in essence faster to get the job done than relying on battery power.

A pneumatic tool is ideal in production environments where large volumes of rivet nuts are looking to be set. They provide fast, efficient, repeatable setting and most rivet nut guns work on the process of either pressure setting or stroke setting.

Pressure setting tools work on the basis of pulling back until the tool reaches a specified pressure, at which point the rivet nut is set, and the tool spins off.

Stroke setting rivet nut tools are set to a maximum stroke for the material thickness, and when the tool reaches this thickness, they release leaving the rivet nut set.

Each offer specific advantages, for instance a pressure set tool can be used with the same rivet nut in a wider variety of panel thickness without adjustment, whereas a stroke setting tool can only be used in one material thickness. A stroke setting tool is ideal in a single application where the rivet nut or material thickness does not vary.
