Good quality rivet and rivet nut tools are an investment to your business and taking care of them will reward you with many years service of trouble free operation. By following our top tips your fastening tools they’ll help to keep your production areas running more efficiently, faster and with less production downtime due to inefficient tooling.
Here’s our top tips to keep your fastening tools working for you.
Regular Servicing
It may seem obvious but just like your car your fastening tool benefits from regular servicing from trained personnel who can service your tool with the minimum of fuss. This may include the changing of oil seals and other parts to keep your tool working to its full capabilities.
Operator Training
Making sure your Operator understands fully the workings of the fastener tool he is given is paramount to the longevity of your tool. Many tools today are capable of setting a variety of rivets and rivet nuts with the correct set up. Operators need to understand the variance in rivet or rivet nut size and how this can affect the operation of a tool.
Air Supply
Almost all rivet and rivet nut tools operate between 5 and 7 bar air pressure (80-100p-si). How that is delivered to your tool has a major bearing on how efficient your tool is and with this in mind it’s worth making sure you regulate your air supply to the tool.
Air flow is another consideration often overlooked. By utilising a large bore air hose and fitting, such as the 320 series fitting, the air intake of your tool is increased providing a more efficient setting tool in every application.
Keep Your Jaws & Mandrels in Good Condition
Regular maintenance and cleaning of rivet jaws and rivet nut mandrels will make sure your fasteners are always set correctly. Changing your rivet nut mandrel every 200,000 rivet nuts ensures the thread bearing area offers consistent grip when inserting rivet nuts.
If you find rivet jaws sticking, a smear of jaw lube on them can offer a barrier avoiding them from sticking in the nosepiece.
Keep Tools Clean
Keep your tools in a clean condition. A quick wipe down with a cloth or rag will avoid all but the worst grime that can accumulate from regular use, and in doing so can show up any oil leaks that may occur over time. If you find oil leaks, it’s time for a service!
Check Your Oil
Many tools have the option for ensuring your oil is topped up. Running tools without oil is a fast way to shorten their life. A few minutes spent each week making sure your tool has oil can help avoid costly repair and servicing bills.
Store Safely When Not in Use
If your tools are not in regular use it’s worth making sure they’re stored safely. Don’t leave tools lying around not in use attached to the air line with the vacuum left on. This can lead to dirt and debris being sucked into the tool. Most tools come supplied with their own storage case and this is ideal for keeping in.
